Guidelines for
Submitting a PIA Story

Here’s what you need to know.

PIA (Philanthropy In Action) is a collaborative platform focused on putting a spotlight on the contribution of philanthropy to our communities.

Organized philanthropies such as grantmaking foundations have a major impact on their communities and societies. However, this impact is not well-known and the stories of philanthropy in action are not told or heard.

Many philanthropic organizations do create content in various ways to share their stories and lessons learned or to communicate about the work of their partners in community. However, when these stories are only shared individually, the collective impact is lost in all the daily media noise.

PIA is managed and promoted by Philanthropic Foundations Canada but is a shared platform, available to anyone in organized philanthropy.

Important Note: We accept stories in every funding category. Categories will be added to the home page as we have content to display. In other words, you are not limited to the categories that appear there now.

The Bare Essentials for Every Story We Publish

Successful contributions will be comprehensive, data-driven, and interesting. They will tell the story of the impact of a foundation, donor-advised fund or corporate giving program in a community or across the country. We are aware that many philanthropic organizations focus on telling the stories of their grantees. We want stories that focus on the funder-grantee relationship and that go further and demonstrate how the impact achieved would not have been the same without the intervention of that particular funder. We are looking for stories from grantmaking foundations. That is, foundations whose primary role is to provide grants to grantees.

We look for a few things in everything we publish:

  • Compelling stories, and high-quality writing.
  • Article reflects the writing style/tone of Philanthropy In Action. We aim to be casual, yet helpful, and typically we stay away from buzzwords and jargon.
  • Proper attribution of data, quotations, and outside content referenced in the article.
  • No more than one link to your website in the body of the article.
  • Posts between 800 to 1500 words.

What We Won’t Accept

There are some things we can’t accept:

  • Anything that’s offensive or inaccurate.
  • Anything that’s overly critical of individuals or companies.

How to Submit Your Post

Please use the link provided on the PIA website with the following:

Your completed article as a Word Doc.

Image files (with attribution) in a separate folder. For reference, our images need to be 400px wide and 200px high.

Short philanthropic organization bio including location and a maximum of one anchor text link to your own website.

The Not-So-Fine Print

Submissions must meet PFC’s quality standards in order to get published.

The PIA team reserves the right to edit and adapt your article content as we see fit, and update it in the future for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
