As described below, Philanthropy In Action (PIA) collects only personal information you knowingly provide, and uses it only to help tell stories about philanthropy’s public impact.
1. What personal information do we collect?
When you access our website, we collect anonymous visitor data, such as your computer’s internet protocol (IP) address and browser type.
Users may also choose to provide further information, including their names, email addresses or where they reside. Some of this information may allow personal identification and/or communication.
2. How do we know you consent to this collection?
Beyond the basic information required to serve you website content, we collect anonymous visitor data using “cookies,” small files stored on your device by your browser. These allow us to understand more about our audience—what pages users visit on the site, for instance. Such data are not associated with any personal identity information, will only be recorded if you’ve enabled cookies on your browser and can be blocked without substantially affecting your browsing experience.
Any other information will only be collected for an explicitly stated purpose, through PIA website forms, or from other direct communications you initiate by email, post or phone.
At any time, you may withdraw your consent for us to contact you (or make any other use of personally identifiable information) by notifying us via the contact methods below.
3. Why do we collect this information?
PIA collects anonymous visitor data to better understand site traffic and use patterns, so that in future we can offer users a better browsing experience and more relevant content, as well as helping gauge that content’s reach.
We solicit other personal information to help us better understand organized philanthropy’s public impact, develop new Philanthropy In Action stories and otherwise communicate with people about our work, including through opt-in email updates.
4. Who can access this information?
All personally identifiable information is held in secure computers or networks, only accessible by PIA staff or contractors, who are required to keep it strictly confidential.
We will never sell or trade such information.
Sometimes, PIA’s technical needs or core activities may require identifiable information’s disclosure to trusted third parties, such as service providers. We use Google Analytics to anonymously collect visitor data, for example, and Campaign Monitor to securely manage our e-newsletter subscriptions. And in evaluating either story ideas or its own work’s impact, PIA may also confidentially share submitted information with partners and stakeholders. But such third parties will never use this information to contact you, and we will never publish any of your personally identifiable information, unless we first obtain your explicit consent.
5. Where should I send privacy-related queries, comments or notices?
If you would like to access/correct/amend/delete any personal information we’ve collected about you, register a complaint or simply want more information, email us at email@example.com. Or contact us by post, at the following address:
